Flight of the Butterfly

How do you know when a painting is complete? I once believed that this painting was finished and I released it into  a show. But alas the painting returned. I decided it needed something more or less. Truly a conundrum. These butterflies hung on my studio wall for a bit. By chance or perhaps fate, I went on a walk along fields dotted with milkweed. Problem solved. And so I painted some more and have now declared this painting complete.
